The last great edition of the glossed Corpus iuris civilis appeared 1627 in Lyon. Ernst Spangenberg called it succinctly “the best”. Connoisseurs such as M. Camus and M. Dupin knew how to appreciate this edition: “on estime beaucoup”. The entire 16th century through to 1627 added new ingredients to the glossed Corpus iuris civilis editions. The famous 1627 edition is not a pure Accursius gloss, but a practical book that gives pride of place not only to Accursius but also Bartolus, Baldus, Duaren, Donellus, Contius, Charondas, Gothofredus, Cujas, Pacius and others.
