Sir Robert Joseph PHILLIMORE war zunächst als Advokat in London tätig, bevor er 1875 eine Richter Stelle am Obersten Gericht in England bekleidete. Dort sprach er Recht bis zum Jahre 1883. Phillimore verfasste eine Reihe von wichtigen Werken, unter denen die Kommentare zum Internationalen Recht herausragen. Sir Robert Joseph PHILLIMORE (1810-1885) became an advocate of Doctor`s Commons in 1839 and a barrister in 1841. He became Admiralty advocate in 1855 and Queen`s Advocate in 1862. He was also an M. P., 1852-57. He became judge of the Court of Admiralty and Dean of the Arches 1867-75, and thereafter sat as judge of the Probate, Divorce ad Admiralty Division of the High Court till 1883. He was a great scholar and jurist, and pronounced many important judgments in maritime, ecclesiastical and probate and divorce law. He also sat on many Royal commissions. He worte the most important Commentaries on International Law (4 vols., 1854-61 and late editions) and the monography about The law of domicil.
